The Special Needs Mama Bear® Closes a Critical Education Gap for Mothers Raising Children With Disabilities

Drawing on more than two decades of raising a son with cerebral palsy and 19 years of working with families internationally, Christine Staple Ebanks created The Special Needs Mama Bear®, a parent education platform that helps mothers turn information from multiple systems into informed decisions for their children and families.

Christine Staple Ebanks remembers the Saturday morning when she first realized that motherhood had entered unfamiliar territory. She was sitting in a pediatrician’s office with her seven-month-old son, Nathan, when she heard the words “Mom, your son is exhibiting global developmental delays, and I believe he has a condition called cerebral palsy.” Two months later, a pediatric neurologist confirmed the diagnosis of cerebral palsy.

Staple Ebanks was already an experienced mother of three, but she was new to disability. The diagnosis gave her a name, but no context for understanding what it meant. How would cerebral palsy affect Nathan’s life? How would it affect her life? What did she need to do? What came next? All she could feel was a fear that ripped through her heart and remained with her for years, until learning about Nathan’s disability and how to support him began to replace that fear with understanding.

Nathan is now 22. As he grew from infancy into adulthood, Staple Ebanks learned first about his disability and his individual needs, and then how to navigate the medical, educational, therapeutic, and disability service systems surrounding his life. Over time, she also discovered that her experience was not unique.

For the past 19 years, Staple Ebanks has worked with parents of children with disabilities in several countries, helping families build knowledge, navigate systems, and make informed decisions. Across different communities and stages of life, she saw the same pattern: Professionals were formally educated and trained for their respective roles, while parents were expected to understand recommendations from multiple systems, determine how that information applied to their child, and make decisions that could shape their child’s future without any formal training.

The scale of this preparation gap extends far beyond the families Staple Ebanks has personally served. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in six children and adolescents ages 3 to 17 in the United States has one or more developmental delays, disorders, or disabilities. Behind that statistic are families entering unfamiliar territory and parents expected to make consequential decisions for their children without consistent preparation for the role.

Staple Ebanks created The Special Needs Mama Bear®, the flagship education platform of Raising Special Needs Inc., in response to that need.

The Special Needs Mama Bear® is a parent education ecosystem designed to prepare mothers for the evolving responsibilities of raising a child with disabilities. Through parent education forums, books, community-based learning, practical tools, trusted guidance, and other educational resources, the platform helps mothers understand their child’s disability, connect and apply information from multiple sources, and prepare for the decisions that emerge as their child grows. This education supports mothers from early diagnosis and the school years through adulthood and major life transitions. At the center of the platform is a parent education framework developed by Staple Ebanks: Identity → Education → Transformation → Advocacy.

The framework recognizes that effective advocacy begins long before a parent enters a meeting or questions a decision. It begins with understanding who she is, what her child’s disability means, and how it affects their lives. Education provides the knowledge and tools needed to understand the child’s needs, navigate systems, and evaluate available options. Transformation occurs as that knowledge begins to replace fear and uncertainty and is applied to everyday life and real decisions. Advocacy grows from that preparation, allowing mothers to participate with greater clarity and confidence in the teams and systems that shape their children’s lives.

For parents, the result is practical. They are better prepared to ask focused questions, identify what information is missing, evaluate recommendations, and determine what is appropriate for their child. For professionals, educators, and researchers, the platform raises a broader question: What could change for children with disabilities if parent education were treated as an essential part of their support system?

Staple Ebanks believes those parents should not have to assemble their preparation by chance. By combining more than two decades of raising Nathan, 19 years of working with families internationally, and her professional background as a human services practitioner, parent educator, and author, she has transformed a deeply personal experience into an education model with the potential to strengthen families and improve how parents engage with the professionals who serve their children. The Special Needs Mama Bear® gives mothers a place to begin.
